Junior Infants

Junior Infants is such an exciting place to be! Our classroom is a place where we actively learn from first thing in the morning through to home time. Whilst learning from all areas of the curriculum your child is all the while immersing themselves in the Irish language.

We quickly settle into school life when we meet all our new friends and see all the new and fun things we get to play with and do everyday. We learn to share, play with others and become more independent.

Language Development

Rhymes, songs, meeting all the characters and hearing all the stories from ‘Séideán Sí’ and ’Jolly Phonics’ programmes keep us busy, and we quickly find ourselves on the path to speaking ‘as Gaeilge’ and reading. Using lots of different materials in practicing our patterns, shapes and letters soon sees our writing take off! We love all the books in our classroom and especially love the books that we get to take home and read with our families. Sometimes we even get to make our own books in school.

Mathematics
We soon become fine mathematicians and every day we get to experiment with concrete materials. Before long we can count to five, know all of our shapes, follow patterns, tell if something is long or short, small or tall and lots more!

Social Environmental and Scientific Education (S.E.S.E.)
We become more aware of the changing seasons, weather and animals around us. In Science we do lots of experiments and learn about things like electricity and light! We also love to hear all the lovely stories, talking about our families and ourselves in our history lessons.

Physical Education (P.E.)
One of our favourite times in the week is when we get to go to the yard for Spórt. It helps us to keep fit and healthy and we love to learn new games.

Visual Art
Another time in the week when we get really excited is Art and Crafts time. We love it when we draw or paint pictures or when we make things with clay or other fun things that teacher has in the art cupboard. We feel so proud when we see our work hanging in the classroom.

Music
Music is a huge part of our day. We love singing songs, listening to music and even making our own music when the percussion box comes out!

Religion
The stories, songs and activities from Alive-O help us to think about the people that love and help us everyday.

Drama
After hearing a nice story or poem teacher helps us to build our confidence and our listening skills. We play lots of drama games and learn how to use our voices, imaginations and work with others.

The following are some general suggestions for parents/guardians to help us prepare for our first year at school:

* Share toys and play with others
* Use toilet correctly
* Wash and dry hands
* Use a tissue
* Open/close school bag and lunch box
* Put in/take out contents of school bag
* Play with toys/books and put them back neatly
* Put on, take off and hang up own coat

* Tying laces/fastening shoes
* Be as independent as possible
* Labhair cúpla focail!
