PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR GAELSCOIL CHALADH AN TREOIGH

Starting life in the Gaelscoil is a very important aspect in the progress of your child’s life. It is imperative that every support from home is offered to ensure that the pupil settles into school without any problems. Parents/Guardians have a vital role in helping their child to become confident and independent.

IN GENERAL
Encourage your child to be competent in the following:

Use of a tissue.
Use toilet correctly.
Wash and dry hands
Put on, take off and hang up own coat.
Open/close school bag and lunch box, put in/take out contents.
Share toys, play with others.
Collect toys/books, put them where they belong.
To be as independent as possible.
Tying laces/fastening shoes.

ACADEMICALLY
Read to your child frequently. Allow them to partake, eg.holding book, talk about pictures, turning pages
Your child should know his/her own name, address and phone number
Speak as much Irish as you can with him/her, eg:
Bainne/tae/dinnéar/brioscaí/milseáin Éirigh/dúisigh /déan deifir/ féach/éist Dia duit /slán/go raibh maith agat/go maith/ar fheabhas/go hálainn.

Encourage him/her to colour, paint.
Recognise colours.
Recite poems, sing songs to him/her.
Play number games, e.g. What time is it Mr. Wolf?


OTHER
N.B. Ensure that all child’s belongings are labelled - uniform, books pencils, bag etc.
Ensure schoolbag fits A4 size book.
Remind them not to leave the yard at any time without an adult.
