Rang I

In Rang I children have to get used to a longer day than before: 08:45a.m.-2:25p.m.

Irish
Pupils continue to develop oral Irish reading and writing skills. In addition, shared reading is continued. The Séideán Sí programme is utilised for learning. Pupils are rewarded for effort in speaking Irish with a weekly 'Glór na Seachtaine' trophy.

English

We continue with the Sunny Street reading scheme supplemented with reading material, e.g. Oxford Reading Tree, from various sources to encourage more independent reading, to develop phonics, phonemic awareness and to improve confidence, fluency and comprehension. Shared reading is continued.
We use the Spellbound programme for our English spellings and place emphasis on the “Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check” approach.

Mathematics
Number work continues from 0-100 with addition, subtraction and problem solving. Measures include time, weight, capacity, length, money and shape. We learn tables - addition and subtraction - by heart.

Visual Arts
Creativity and expression are encouraged through various activities using a variety of media - paint, crayon, pastels, fabric and fibre and clay.

Music
The music programme is based upon The Right Note music scheme. Focus is placed on rhythm, singing and musical appreciation. We enjoy singing songs in both Irish and English.

Religion
We use the Beo-go-Deo 3 programme. We use prayer, story, song and worksheets to teach the children about God. We love to sing songs from Beo go Deo.

Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (S.E.S.E.)
In S.E.S.E children study history through topics such as family, school and local history, traditions, festivals, homes and changes through the years. Our natural environment is covered under local environment, seasonal change, animal and plant life and habitats. Science explores energy and forces, magnetism and light and sound.

We look forward to our monthly Science experiments conducted with Rang II

Social, Personal and Health Education (S.P.H.E.)
S.P.H.E. helps to promote environmental awareness and care, hygiene, issues of friendship, safety, anti-bullying and group and team work.

We use a homework journal for the first time in Rang I where we note down homework.

Physical Education (P.E.)
Pupils partake in a variety of sporting activities - games, dancing, athletics and football.
In addition, they continue with Irish dancing in the local GAA hall.
