Rang II
Irish
We use the prestigious Seideán Sí Irish programme, specifically designed for Gaelscoileanna and Gaeltacht schools. We read lots of books and learn a repertoire of poems, rhymes and songs. We also listen to stories, in CD format. The writing activities in our workbooks are also very enjoyable.
English
We have some interesting books from the Fiction Favourites programme.
We learn lots of new words and look forward to seeing what happens next in our stories. We are learning to be good writers and editors by doing lots of story writing exercises. We read lots of different books every week during shared reading at school and at home. After reading books from our classroom library we often write book reviews and read them to each other. Our teacher reads us novels and we enjoy listening to and learning poems.
Maths
We are busy adding and subtracting and learning how to regroup our tens and units. We learn how to measure, use money and tell the time. We also make graphs and use shapes. On different occasions and for National Maths Week, we enjoy playing maths games and taking part in maths activities.
Social Environmental Scientific Education (S.E.S.E.)
We are very interested in learning about legends, life long ago and people in history such as Fionn Mac Cumhaill. We study natural habitats in our local environment and enjoy investigating and discussing results from our science experiments. Occasionally, we join with Rang I to explore different themes in science.
Music
We learn a wide repertoire of Irish and English songs in Rang II. We use percussion instruments, from our school music box, to accompany music and to compose music. We are introduced to a wide range of instruments and explore different music styles and traditions.
Visual Arts
We enjoy using a range of different art materials to create various art pieces in school. We like painting, drawing, printing, using clay, fabric and fibre. We enter a number of art competitions during the year. We also learn about famous artists such as Van Gogh and Monet. Sometimes we display our art work in the local Credit Union and Castletroy Shopping Centre.
Physical Education (P.E.)
We take part in many activities in P.E., including games, athletics, outdoor and adventure activities. We attend an Irish dancing class with the Nolan School of Irish Dancing throughout the year. In Rang II we can train for the gaelic football and hurling teams after school.
Religion
In Rang II we prepare for the sacrament of Penance and First Holy Communion. We attend special masses with our parents/guardians in our local church in Monaleen under the Do This In Memory programme. The school chaplain pays us regular visits and helps us to prepare for the sacraments. We listen to stories about Jesus and we like to retell them in class.
