Irish

At this stage we are confident in speaking Irish, and we are striving to improve the accuracy and vocabulary of the language. In addition to using the comprehensive Séideán Sí programme, we read a novel 'ó Lúibíní Lú', as well as other Irish reading material which is kept in the classs library. We recieve the Irish newspaper 'Foinse' each week, from which we source new vocabulary and phrases. Each day, a new phrase is posted on our wall, with a new seanfhocal each week. We are proud to have an 'Irish shop' in our classroom, where you can redeem your irish cards for a small reward.



English
The English books we cover in fifth class are Matter of Fact, and Starry Links.We also enjoy reading our novel 'I am David' We are striving to be good writers and editors by doing lots of writing exercises and essays. During silent reading time, we enjoy reading books from our classroom library, after which we often write book reviews. We enjoy writing in different genres, which provides variety in our English class.

Maths
In fifth class we are busy perfecting our multiplication and division skills, and completing activities on capacity, weight, time, length, area. We also learn how to make and read graphs. In class, we enjoy playing maths games and taking part in maths activities escpecially during National Maths Week.

Social Environmental Scientific Education (S.E.S.E.)
We enjoy learning new facts, and exploring the past during History, Geography and Science. Our science class is supplemented with the 'Eureka' science magazine, from which we carry out some of our science experiments. We also enjoy researching particular areas, from which we compose projects.

Music
As well as learning songs and theory from 'The Right Note' music scheme, we learn songs for the annual 'Hallelujah Concert', which we thoroughly enjoy. Everyone in the class learns to play a range of tunes on the tin whistle. Children who play other instruments are encouraged to bring them to school and perform in class and at school events.

Visual Arts
We use a diverse range of materials during art class, to cover the different curriculum strands. We enjoy learning about new artists, and imitating their techniques in our own work. We enter different art competitions during the year.

Physical Education (P.E.)
We enjoy a wide variety of activities during PE including hockey, Gaelic football, soccer, hurling, dodge-ball, badminton, rounders and basketball. On Fridays, we learn Irish dancing from the Nolan School of Irish Dancing. The much enjoyed swimming classes begin in January.

Spanish
We are fortunate to receive Spanish lessons for beginners during the year. The children love this and it gives them a good basic knowledge of a language more widely spoken than any other in the world?

Hunt Museum
We are very fortunate to have the renowned Hunt Museum in Limerick city. Fifth class go on an annual visit to the museum to avail of their innovative workshops and varied exhibitions.
